COSMIC BREAKS @ SUPERNATURAL HAUS, MIAMI, 7.15.2023

Miami broke out spinning last weekend for Pantheon World and SaturnSarii’s first

installment of COSMIC BREAKS at Supernatural Haus. Under the city’s summer spell, its night

creatures stepped to a lineup of DJs and performing artists in the experimental hip-hop and

underground dance music scene: 619!, Duality, ctrl+opt, DJ Tamsom, SEL6 b2b Simplicity, Roc

Chamberlin, SUZ.

Fresh off the release of their EP—DNTB: Dancing Nurtures the Body, duo 619! kicked off

with a mix of cut-back samples and UKG that set the pace for a night of long, unbridled body

nurturing. Though all together unified in the sounds and rhythms of movement, as the lineup progressed from the breakbeat intensity of mixes by Duality or ctrl+opt to the Miami-bred hip-

hop of Roc Chamberlin or SUZ, the change of style between sets was distinguishable, impressively through the vibrant thickness of the air filled to the ceiling with smoke and haze and flashes of sonic hue which—for those farther than ten feet from the stage, those bobbing their heads toward the floor in solitude or those consumed entirely by dance—disembodied each performer’s sound behind a curtain of fog like the Wizard of Oz remixed.

As the night arrived near to dawn, it showed Miami to be the ultimate playground for its net

of underground music-lovers and rave athletes, those for whom spirit is a virtue. Considering

the city’s reputation as a site of happening, it’s no surprise that an event series like COSMIC

BREAKS was born here. In another city, at another venue, such an event might not receive a

deserving home, at least not as deserving as Miami, a home for excitement which there truly is

no place like.
